So the free tool should be ok to be used with any broomstick crochet pattern that requires a 3cm-diameter broomstick. As the name implies, originally the handle of a broom was used to make broomstick lace. In others, only the Return Pass is written out as the Loop Pass is almost always the same. In some patterns, the broomstick lace rows will be written as two rows in the pattern, one for each pass. For example, a loop of yarn sitting around the free tool will measure approx 94mm in circumference – divided by pi (31.14), that’s approx 30mm. Broomstick lace rows are worked in two passes the Loop Pass and Return Pass both made from the right side of the fabric, without turning. Most patterns quote the diameter of the ‘broomstick’ but if you use a flat broomstick like your free tool, you’ll need to measure the circumference of the tool and divide by pi (3.14) to get the diameter equivalent. You’ll also need a broomstick tool – we’ve used the free tool from Simply Crochet magazine here but you could also use another large ‘broomstick’ such as a crafting dowel, large knitting needle, ruler, marker pen, cardboard tube or an actual broomstick. Grab a standard hook to go with it, in a suitable size for the yarn (check the yarn’s ball band). This completes your first row of broomstick lace! You can now draw loops up through each of the single crochet stitches you made in step 5, and continue to repeat steps 1-5 till your project reaches the desired length.First things first, you need some yarn – you can use any yarn for broomstick crochet, but when you’re first learning, it’s best to use a smooth DK yarn that won’t split when you work with it. Note: make sure to check how many loops you have in each group to avoid accidental increases or decreases.Ħ. Continue this process until all the loops have been crocheted into. Now don’t be afraid, this pattern is less complicated than it looks and all you really need is large knitting needles, a dowel, or even a broomstick to create this wonderful stitch. Work one single crochet for every loop in the group on your hook (I worked 5 single crochet into the group of 5 loops). Broomstick lace started back in the 1800s where people actually used broomsticks to crochet this type of lace (hence the name). Yarn over and pull through the group of large loops on your hook. At this point, if it is easier for you to manage, you can remove the large needle from your work altogether.ĥ. Broomstick lace crochet requires an additional tool to create the sweeping loops that are characteristic to this stitch. When making broomstick lace, this tool is often called the “pin.”ġ. It's open and airy, making it great for fall. I used a needle from a pair of ‘Speed Stix’ (US 50/25mm). The broomstick lace crochet stitch is one of the most unique and beautiful of crochet stitches. Large knitting needle (or actual broomstick, if you dare!): You can use any large needle for this project the larger your needle, the larger your loops will be.I used a US K10.5/6.5mm hook for larger, more open stitches. Crochet hook: Use whatever hook you feel works best with your yarn.I chose Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft Wool Blend because I love the twist and soft luster.
